The Three Bears – “Warhol” Style

We have a lot of bears in Oregon. In fact at our Fiddle Creek property storage sheds are raided regularly and bears have been known to party in unguarded cabins, gorging themselves with what they can find in the refrigerators – kind of like teenagers. I tend to always whistle or sing, or just generally make a lot of noise when I am hiking around those woods alone. A friend of mine who is a zoologist recommended I buy some bear bells to wear on my shoes when I am out walking. It’s on my list. Bears have a special place in our hearts in my family, mostly because we are always trying to avoid them. However, if I had an animal spirit guide, it would most likely be an incorrigible but quick witted bear.

Recently my husband and I were visiting downtown Bend and came across some fantastic art that captured this bear essence but in a unique pop art way reminiscent of a Warhol work. Perfect for my little house in the woods. This house is one where we and others go to relax and unwind and not be too serious, so these three bears are our home’s ambassadors of culture.

If you have never been to Bend, I highly recommend grabbing a Fodors,  work in a day hike around the area then spending an afternoon touring all the shops, so many great local artisans, brew pubs and restaurants.

Little House in the Big Woods – Half Pint Updates the Bedroom

As a child growing up in Southern California, when most kids were busy skateboarding, going to the beach or hanging up Keith Partridge posters in their bedroom, you could most likely find me re-reading a Little House book and obsessing about all things Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was the girl that actually belonged to the Laura Ingalls Wilder fan club at the local library. I would have jumped for the opportunity to give up my banana seat Schwinn, Toot a Loop radio and Morey boogie board, in exchange for the pioneer girl life of churning butter, shopping for calico and traveling the country in a covered wagon. The highlight of my childhood were our family vacations were we left the crowded suburbs of Huntington Beach  and travelled deep into the Oregon coastal woods. These rustic wilderness trips were always short lived but planted the seed for my own future move to Oregon and    the purchase of my own Little House in the Big Woods outside of Bend.

This weekend my husband and I spent some time at the “little house” updating our master bedroom. Ok, so Brian actually spent his time chopping down some trees and I fixed up the bedroom – but he drove so he gets an honorable mention. This house has a definite “lodge” interior including lodge pole furniture (which is perfect as this home does double duty as a lodge resort rental).  However, the bedroom had a funky traditional polyester tapestry and velvet comforter set. The prior owners had also painted one wall of the master bedroom a brownish/rust color. I wanted a more casual look to the room and wanted to incorporate more organic natural fabrics and was totally prepared to paint out the accent wall.  I found a stunning bedding set at Pine Cone Hill that ended up working so well we left the accent wall as is.  I also incorporated a fun blanket ladder and switched out the fancier lamps for these beauties. Overall I am very happy with the look. I didn’t plan on this but the colors also coordinate with the patio furniture right out side the bedroom’s sliding glass door. The room has its own little private patio with a hot tub (another selling point on the home) and I had repurposed some old patio furniture my parents give me not knowing how everything would tie together in the end…Destiny!

Sentimental Chalk Paint Journey

Once upon a time there was a china closet that was the centerpiece in my parents living room. For 20 years it took center stage in all of its white wash oak glory. Mom had it filled with her Dutch Delft collection, Italian Capodimonte flowers and crystal and more crystal.  Each collectible had a story and Mom would love to share the history of each and every piece. The cabinet itself had beautiful leaded beveled glass doors and was quite stunning even with the white wash. Over time the finish began to actually take on a pinkish tone and was really not so stunning anymore. When Mom passed away the piece was handed down to me. And there it sat in my garage for months (actually a few years). I really had a sentimental attachment to the piece (my Mom adored it) and as I also inherited many of Mom’s crystal and china I did need some extra cabinet storage, but was not ready to integrate a “Southwesternish” white wash/pink piece into my home. Trying to figure what or how to refinish this piece was how I began using Annie Sloan chalk paint and literally fell in love with this product. No stripping or sanding, fantastic coverage and with a wax (not varnish) finish the end result is really stunning. I studied every YouTube video on how to use the product and just jumped in. I chose to use the color Graphite with a dark wax finish. I also integrated some distressing and now the cabinet has found a home on my upstairs landing. As I was learning how to use the paint I was told that I would become addicted to transforming other furniture in my house…which is totally true! After the cabinet I immediately refinished my dated bedroom dressers and am starting to eye my Ethan Allen dining room table. Although my husband is having issues with painting Ethan Allen furniture, when the stars align and I find just the right “inspiration” I think that table will become chalk paint project #3.

Prepping for Sunriver

This last week I have been gathering all the new decor items for my master bedroom makeover and laid everything out on my dining room table. I had a real struggle landing on the lamps I wanted for the bedside table. I absolutely loved the glass bottle lamp with the woven grass shade but I am pretty sure it’s going to be much too large for the bedside tables. So I purchased these backup lamps. I will be returning what doesn’t fit but I will be prepared when I have to put everything together. I am really in love with the Pine Cone Hill bedding. The euro pillows photographed a bright orange but they are really more of a beautiful burnt sienna.  Its hard to make out the blanket ladder in the background but that is one of my favorite purchases. It will look stunning with the lodge pole pine furnishings in the room. More to come!

Bend Vacation Home

Last year my husband and  I realized one of our dreams and purchased this vacation home in Sunriver, Oregon. Sunriver is actually a vacation resort (near Bend) located in the foothills of the Cascade mountain range along the Deschutes river in Central Oregon. Unlike other areas of Oregon, Sunriver gets 300 days of sunshine a year and is an outdoor lovers paradise. We had been vacationing here for years with our family and decided last year to buy a home here. We bought the home completely furnished and we do have it listed in the resorts “rental pool” and VRBO so others can enjoy the home when we are not using it.  The home had also recently been updated when we purchased it so I have had little to do to personalize this space.  I did want to provide a facelift here and there and thought I would share some of my “freshening up.”  Here is tour with some of my updates:

Outside Entry

FrontEntryExterior

The only thing I did for the entry is add a few Adirondack chairs. I actually bought these chairs as a pair at Costco, but they are available everywhere. I actually prefer teak Adirondacks but they require some upkeep and I wanted something low maintenance. These chairs are actually faux wood and look pretty great. They have made it through one winter, uncovered, and still look fabulous.

Before: Entry

The prior owners had custom built the hall tree. They decided to take the 6 foot bench with them as it was gift for the wife. This left me with a huge dilemma. I would never find a bench that really matched so I decided to do something different.

After: Entry

I scoured the internet and stores for days. I became obsessed about benches and finally found what I think is perfect. This beauty. A dark brown industrial bench that also compliments the iron and copper entry table.  I added a  pottery barn Kilim rug and leather pillow to the bench. Perfect! Although I do want to look at getting some different pillows in some complimentary colors to  the rug. More to come here.

Great Room

GreatRoom

Why I bought this home was for its great room layout and lodge like feeling. The prior owners finished out all the interior trim in fir and pine. The fire place was redone in gray stacked stone and the windows all look out into the beautiful Deschutes forest. There is nothing better than having a fire and gazing out into the woods. The only thing I did here was update one of the lamps. I found that  awesome deer antler lamp in the back corner at a consignment shop and new it would be happier here in this room.

So below is where the real updating happened. I loved how the prior owners opened up the kitchen (it was a separate room prior to remodel) and painted the kitchen cabinets a beautiful slate gray. What I did not like were the laminate countertops. This screamed update me! The dining room table was also on its last legs and the ceiling fixture was too traditional and out of place for a lodge home. I also wanted to update the display items on the kitchen cabinets. A little too small scale and a tad too country for my taste. By the way that wine fridge in the island was definitely another selling point.

kitchenUPDATEDThe kitchen countertops were replaced with both walnut and quartz. I picked out a quartz countertop from Martha Stewart’s line at Home Depot. This quartz is called Flagstone and has very nice gray and slight earthy stone flecks that went with the cabinets and home. I love marble with gray cabinets but this home needed something marble like, but less formal. I also wanted to integrate a wood countertop and chose walnut. The walnut compliments the gray cabinets and matches the walnut flooring.  I brought in some fun new decor for the top of the cabinets and found the Black Dog brewing picture at my favorite consignment shop.  We are definitely known for our brew pubs here in Oregon!

GreatRoom-Din-Kit

I swapped out the old dining table and purchased a beautiful Monroe  trestle table at World Market. This table is phenomenal. It is 108″ long and seats 10. The spaces really needed a large table. I added gray linen-like dining room chairs that I found at Target(! ) I also updated the dated countertop stools with some fun industrial metal ones. They really freshen up the space and now we can seat up to 13 for dinner.  When we visit we often bring friends and extended family and every seat is taken.  Perhaps the biggest statement piece in the room is my Rhone Glass Tiered chandelier from Pottery Barn. This  large scaled rustic lighting piece fits the room perfectly and is just what the space needed.   I also brought in some art for that wide open wall space over the leather chairs. I will share with a later post. But it was inspired by “Andy Warhol meets Smokey the Bear”.

The only thing I added was the cow hide rug. Again another awesome consignment shop find. I thought it went well with the Pendleton blanket and leather accent pillow. This room has such a nice forest view.

The Bunk Room

BunkRoom

This is a fun room . I loved the lodge pole furnishings and the room can sleep a ton of kids on vacation.  That bunk bed is a double over queen and the twin bed is a trundle!  I added the pine dresser and fun blue medicine cabinet mirror. What was missing was a TV/Entertainment Center. We knew that we needed a space for all the little “gamers” who would be visiting. But there was literally no empty wall space left that was conducive for a small gang of kids to sit around a gaming console…so we got a little creative.

gamecenterinbunkroom

There is still plenty of room left in the closet to hang clothes but most importantly we have an awesome place that will keep the kids entertained with Wii, Xbox etc…(I honestly don’t know what got hooked up here, but my 20 yr old son ensures all the appropriate games have been included:)).

Master Bedroom

Masterbed-bath

This is still a work in progress. The bedroom is small and the bedding is little too traditional for the space.  However I love the patio off the Master with the hot tub. There is nothing like being outside on a moonlit night  under the pine trees star-gazing. I will posting my updates to this room soon. I have already chosen new bedding and accessories that will provide the facelift this room needs. More to come.

Patio

BackExterior

This patio was in pretty sorry shape when we purchased the home. We repaired and re-stained the deck and added the patio furniture. What a difference.  None of the homes in Sunriver have fencing and all the outdoor spaces open up to forested common areas. So ensuring the space looked inviting was very important.

I have been having a blast updating, refreshing and of course vacationing here. I have to say this one of my favorite projects as it gets me to visit one of my favorite places on earth.

Welcome to Fiddle Creek Home

DSC_0015

Welcome  to my inaugural blog post! What you are looking at is the inspiration of what took me from my crazy busy over-crowded life in Southern California to the paradise of the Pacific Northwest. This is Fiddle Creek, a magical piece of  wonderland located on Siltcoos Lake, Oregon. This is where generations of my family at one time called home. Yes, this is the place where the fish are jumping, the eagles are cruising and great Blue Herons are nesting. Where  the only noise is the breeze rustling through the spruce and hemlock trees.  To visit you must be comfortable with being both off the grid and at ease with a truly rustic experience. This place calls me when I am over stressed and under nurtured. When I leave, I am always ready to start a new project or explore new ideas.  Fiddle Creek Home is the place where I will be sharing such creative design, home improvement or just interesting ideas.  So come on in, relax and get inspired.
